Why do they put a laugh track in American sitcoms?

Well laughter is contagious, so I think that is done with the hopes that the audience will find the humor to be even funnier than it really is.

It adds a humorous or festive mood.

It used to be the normal thing.  It's simply awful.  Now days, a good lot of shows are filmed before a live audience.

Because it works.  We are social animals and when we hear laughter we are more likely to laugh, even if the joke sucked.  It's hard-wired into our brains.

There are clips online of some famous Seinfeld scenes that EVERYONE remembers being hilarious like Soup Nazi.  They have removed the laugh track.  Watch them.  They're completely unfunny.

I hate laugh tracks, but they work.  So as a sitcom you can either work hard to come up with good jokes OR you could use a laugh track and coast on poor jokes.

So people can believe that shows like 'Two and a Half Men' are a lot funnier than they actually are

To let us know that they just made a joke, in case we missed it.

It started out with being filmed in front of a live studio audience. But sometimes people wouldn’t laugh when they were supposed to, so they added a big sign that said LAUGH and it would light up when the audience was supposed to laugh. But that didn’t work out very well so they just got rid of the audience and added recorded laughter where they wanted laughter.
