Which banks issue British Pounds in addition to the Central Bank (Bank of England)?

And why do public or mixed economy banks issue notes (in addition to the Central Bank)?

    The Bank of Scotland, the Royal Bank of Scotland, the Clydesdale Bank all do in Scotland -- the notes are primarily recognized in Scotland, but they do travel into England, Wales and Ireland.

    The Bank of Ireland, Ulster Bank and Danske Bank (plus, I think, the First Trust Bank) issue their own notes in Northern Ireland, and they're also considered legal currency in place of the Pound Sterling (the Bank of England notes).

    But they all are considered real money....
