What does whole mean?
His parents did not approve of his becoming a voice actor after studying for four whole years in the medical school.
What does "whole" in "four whole years" mean? Is this just for emphasis? Thanks!

You're correct it is put in there to emphasize the amount of time, the full 4 years, he spent at medical school.
It helps draw a stronger contrast to the field in which he studied in opposition to the career he now has as a voice actor.
