Is the NFL making a mistake giving out these huge contracts knowing their revenues are going to take some huge hits in the next few years?

Not just the virus but with the BLM nonsense too. We saw how Kaepernick kneeling hurt the league. This is only going to be much, much worse.

If they can play, even if it is in front of an empty stadium, they will still make money because of the size of the TV contract. Jacksonville was playing in front of an empty stadium just a few years back, and the LA chargers plays in front of less than 20,000 fans and they have no problem making money. Nevertheless, many businesses are not doing well so they may not spend as much money advertising on TV. That may limit the amount the networks are willing to pay.

It will take a hit as you say if they don't back out of the new black national anthem and the kneeling,  but the fans can put pressure on them by not going to their games, nor watching them play on cable. After all, how long will a typical fan be entertained watching teams play with piped in cheering over some loudspeakers that are no match for real fans, cheering. For me, the thought of this is sickening enough. Can't imagine the fake crowd noise coupled with the kneeling. I wonder if they have some boos piped too.

  • No, The Current Television Contracts will cover these contracts. Moreover, the prospect of a lot of College Football Games being cancelled means there may be even more viewers watching The NFL than in years past.

The NFL is about to sign a new TV deal that is expected to DWARF the last one.  They're doing fine.
