How can a person learn how to work hard if they never had to?

I don’t think working hard is even healthy. Just work 40 hours a week and than go home and be happy. Take it easy.

If you work long hard hours and keep your nose to the will wind up tired, bent over and have a bloody stump where your nose used to be.

If you work SMART, you will wind up with cash in the bank and an early retirement in your favorite place.

    Learn to work SMART.

Army is good if you are of that age. Or not just a produce warehouse but any kind of labor. Any warehouse, heavy lifting, slinging a shovel. Why it needs to be a job is so that you can't work for an hour and decide you've had enough for the day.

Ask this person about his dreams then see how or in what way his dreams aligns with your dreams. Are there any similarities at least?

See, it feels harder and  takes more motivation when people work for someone else's dreams and goals.

It feels much easier and takes less motivational coaching when working for your own dreams and goals.

Join the Army.  Stay there for 5 years.  Try to make sergeant.

or you can do what Matthew suggested.

Locate a produce packing House and get a job inside of one of them as a stacker. It's a hard hot job but it's very simple you put the boxes on the pallet and run back and grab another box stay with that job it's annoying it's hot but it's simple and you will build up your endurance and your mental discipline stay with the job for a couple of years until your body in your mind gets used to hard work
