Is there a way to obtain your state ID number without going to the dmv?

No. You will need to present several documents to prove who you are and if those are accepted then you will need to be there for the photo that goes on the ID. This is all part of the tighter requirements brought about after 9/11

No; there's no way. State ID's are issued by each individual state's DMV.  You have to go to a DMV testing site, pay the  application fee (about $25), have your photo taken, a thumb print taken, and provide some sort of proof that you're a resident of the state.

The ID card will look exactly like a driver's license and will contain the same kind of information about you (name, address, date of birth, the card's expiration date). In my state (Texas) state ID's are valid for 6 years and must be renewed at the end of  6 years (about $25). If you're 65 and over, there is a $6 initial application fee and the ID card never expires.

You don't obtain a "number", you obtain a state I.D. card.  Presumably, the card has a number.

Not if you don't have it in front of you.
