The distance between bases on a professional baseball diamond is 27.4m. Amy is the batter and gets a hit. She runs due west to first base then turns due south and runs to second base where she stops. Determine the displacement of second base relative to home plate. Show your work.

distance D = d√1^2+1^2 = d√2 = 27.4√2 m ( ≅ 38.75)

...i.e. the diagonal of a square having side 27.4 m

a^2 + b^2 =c^2

(27.4)^2 + (27.4)^2 = 1501.52

√ (1501.52)= 38.75 m displacement of second base relative to home plate.

It might be easiest to invert the compass and make west positive (+x axis) and south positive (+y axis)

displacement s = (27.4 i^ + 27.4 j^) m

using the unit vector notation with which you should be familiar.

That displacement has magnitude

|s| = 27.4m * √2 = 38.7 m

with direction south west.
