    7/83 x 100 = 8 ( round down since we cant have 0.43373494 of  a cat )

    best way is to visualise it as a fraction equalling another;

    so

    7/x  =   83/100

    multiply the denominators on both sides to both sides to get

    (7*100)=(83*x)

    so isolate x now to get

    700/83 = 8.4337

    note: you cant have 0.43 of a cat so forget this and round down to 8 cats.

    7 cats equal to 83% of all the cats in a house.

    solve x × 83% = 7 for x.

    x = 8.4337

    There are 8 cats in total.

    Find 1% by dividing 7 by 83

    7/83 = 0.84

    Find 100% by multiplying by 100

    0.84 x 100 = 8.4

    The answer is 8.4 cats, which can't be true!

    You can solve this with math, but it's faster and easier to solve it with logic.

    Try using a Guess Chart

    First guess

    :> 10 cats total

    This is wrong because 7 out of 10 cats is only 70%.

    "Ten" is too high.

    Guess again.

    Second guess

    > 9 cats total

    7 cats out of 9 total = 7/9 = about 77% (too low)

    So 9 is also too big

    Guess again

    Third guess

    > 8 cats total

    7 cats out of 8 total  = 7/8 = 87.5% ← the closest whole number answer

    The closest whole number answer is

    There were 8 cats total

    ---------------------

    There is no whole number solution to the problem as written

    7 cats = 83% of how many cats?

    7 = 0.83 x

    x = 7 / 0.83

    x = 8.3 cats ← not a possible answer

    With percents, you have three pieces: base, portion, and rate (percentage).

    P = B x R

    7 = B x 83%

    As a decimal, 83% would be 83 / 100 = 0.03. So you'd have:

    7 = 0.83B

    Solve for B and you'll have your answer! _____ cats. And don't forget, you'll either have a whole cat or no cat. So if your answer comes out to a decimal instead of a whole number, then you'll need to round it to the nearest whole.

    something wrong here ... did you misquote the problem?  usual formulation is 7/N = 83/100 where N is the number of cats in the house.  but if you cross multiply numerators and denominators, 700 = 83N and then divide 700 by 83, you find that the number of cats in the house is 8.43 ... since cats aren't divisible into fractional parts, there's something wrong with the problem
