Individuals develop thought in two ways.  Using emotion (inner thought) and using objective reasoning (outer thought).  Using inner thought necessitates corroboration to validate, thus the need for collectivism.  Outer thought is based upon facts that are assumed to be apparent to all and do not need corroboration for validation (the issue speaks for itself).  Because society is made up of both types of people, group dynamics are different depending on the types of people involved.
