If the masks work, why the 6ft? If the 6ft work, why the masks? If both work , why the lockdown?

Because there is no perfect correlation between masks or social distancing and the prevention of Covid-19.  Both contribute to reducing transmission rates, but neither are perfect at preventing transmission altogether.  Many problems require multivariate analysis to find a solution.

Just like if you want to become wealthy, there are many variables that get you there, but there is no perfect path.  Industry, education, years of experience, geographic location, and other variables all go into that as well.  You can't just move to New York and expect to become wealthy any more than you can just put on a mask and not expect to transmit Covid-19.  You have to take multiple steps.

It should stand to reason that mass proximity facilitates spread and, as a result, facial covering, social distancing, and other protective actions, like hand hygiene, etc. combine to prevent making spread easier. That's why.

There you go, trying to apply objective logic to an emotional issue.  Government needs to keep panic from taking over and to do so requires measures that make people "feel" that they are doing their part--it's all a game.  You can't win, all you can do is help make others "feel" that you are playing by the rules.

If the masks have a 75% success rate, and distancing has a 75% success rate, then doing them both may have an 85-90% success rate.

The measures work, but too many people are ignoring this request to care for others. Wearing a mask is preventing others from being infected by you and protects you from being infected by others.

Think of it like birth control.  If two methods offer 75% protection, don’t choose one; use them both.

Wearing masks is a contentious issue, if you have the virus, it will stop you spreading it.  However the British Government kept telling us throughout April, May & June that wearing masks didn't offer any protection, but suddenly by July that's all changed.

The 2 metre rule offers some protection, whilst inside buildings, at the assumption that droplets sprayed by an infected person either coughing or sneezing, won't go further than 2 metres, unless your in a crowded space with air con, that could spread it round the room.

A combination of social distancing, washing hands, not touching your face and wearing a mask on Public Transport and in Shops, offers you more protection.  As well as not having any underlying health conditions, being overweight or unfit.

Masks protect others from YOU and tiny particles of your spit floating into their face. Masks do not really protect you unless others are wearing masks also. And the 6 feet has been proven wrong. Spit particles can travel up to 40 feet and linger in indoor air for 16 hours.
