    The difference is subtle. Why 'did" invites a list of reasons for something that has already happened. Why "would" invites a justification or an analysis of those reasons. It could be used in a predictive context too:  "Mr X will probably cancel his order if we don't offer him something better."  "Why would he do that?"   "Probably because......"

    Using did make the sentence in the present tense.  Using would, makes the sentence in the  past participle.
