If someone just decides that they want to mentor you, do you owe them your cooperation and respect? Are you letting them down in you fail?

If you choose to have them mentor you, and you fail the " lessons".  As long as you have tried your best, that is all you can do.  If someone mentors you in the Russian language and does it only for a week and you fail, is that your fault ? NO.

Nobody is obliged to accept an offer of mentorship. But if you DO accept it, of course you should treat your mentor with respect, and work willingly with him; otherwise why bother to have one at all?

It is your choice to accept their help or not to
