Why do Catholics keep insisting they're Christians?

Probably because they were founded centuries before the Protestants came about to protest. It's sort of like attempting to claim dial up internet is not internet, when in fact it was the first internet.

The Catholic Bible has the same 66 books of the Protestant Bible, plus an additional 7 books the Protestants did not like. The Catholic Church is a complex system requiring an education to navigate. The Protestant Church is the lazy man's system that requires little to navigate.

I am saying all of this as an atheist who has studied religions. Most Christians are in fact Catholic.

Apostle Paul explains. He identifies that assembly as the great apostasy that would appear before the OT prophesied great and terrible day of the Lords vengeance. Paul prophesied them mid first century and they appeared some 200+ years later. Early 4th century AD

2 Thessalonians 2:3-17 KJV — Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time. For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth: Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle. Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace, Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.

The first pope then was the man of sin and son of perdition.

Probably for the same reason people insisted the Yugo was a car.

Because they are the only Church with a clear history right back to the First Century, when Jesus founded it, and promised it the fullness of God's truth until the end of time. So, why do Protestants, who didn't exist until a few hundred years ago, who have fragmented into thousands of conflicting denominations who can't agree with one another about a single belief, who exist in disobedience to the clearly stated will of Jesus Christ concerning His followers - "that they all may be ONE, even as I and my heavenly Father are ONE" - think they qualify as Christians?

Because they are Christians, silly.  Even though they worship Mary, they also worship God.  And at least they still remember that Christ expects us to obey him, keep his commandments, and do good to other people.  That's more than a lot of fundamentalist and evangelical churches can do.

Probably because they self identify as such.  Why wouldn’t they be?

All 'Christians' were catholics for over 1500 years.

Because Catholics are the original Christians.  It's the Protestants who broke away from Catholicism.

I love watching Christians fight and hate each other.  It's so descriptive of their cult.
