Rarely do foreign powers "help" another nation without a motive or interest. In terms of international trade, the present-day economic system relies heavily on globalization. In ancient times contact with a foreign nation usually meant conquest or war. Look what happened to China after European contact, for example. Or the Indian subcontinent after Mongol invasions. Today geographic barriers such as mountains or deserts or seas are not as great barriers to trade and movement as in the past.
