The English in the first is incorrect. The second is correct and sensible.

They make equal sense, provided you replace the "than" in the first one with "as"

both of these sentences are clear. however, to give you some other suggestions: maybe instead of saying "it shows that" find some actual proof online and include that info in your text (e.i. "[some researcher] found that many gang members..."), maybe remove "and be like everyone else" (a lot of unimportant words that say what you already said "...want to fit in with society..."), change "do not" to "don't", and i'd go with your second ending "...the same opportunities to do so."
