Which sentence is correct?

A. She couldn't waste her time arguing about the matter.

B. She couldn't waste her time by arguing about the matter.

    They are both GRAMMATICALLY correct.

    But most native speakers would probably choose A.

    PS While it's perfectly correct to "argue the matter", there is nothing at all wrong with "arguing about the matter".

    Neither are grammatically correct. 'She wouldn't waste her time arguing the matter', or 'she shouldn't waste her time arguing the matter'. To say that she 'couldn't', suggests that there was some force preventing her from doing so.

    B is a little more formal, but more commonly you would hear people say A.

    Choice A. is correct.
