Is Flushing out eye with tap water safe?

I got some hand sanitizer in my eye and immediately my eye started burning so the first thing I could think of to do was to try and flush my eye out. I went to the sink and blinked a few times with my eye under water in a clean cup. I only got a small drop and only blinked a few times under water until I felt the stinging go away for the most part.

    It is better than nothing.

There are micro organisms and other stuff that is not sterile, in tap water.

Eye wash is sterile and should be in everyone's medicine closet along with an eye flush cup

Tap water can be used and it won’t hurt you,  I know I’ve used milk in an emergency too, it’s not damaging to your tissue and not acidic like sodas can be.  Water is always best to use, any clean water.
