how do you set a price on handmade gifts when shipping them?

I want to send a painting I made overseas as a gift to a friend. For customs, I have to put a value of what I am sending. I don't sell my paintings, so I don't know what value to assign for shipping. How do I come up with a price? Handmade items are only worth how much someone is willing to pay for them...

You can mark it as a gift,  it won't need a price.

Just send the damn thing unwrapped. That way, the customs officers can look at it and assign their own value to it.
