    C+O2 = CO2

    moles of C = mass of C / molar mass of C = (8.60 g)/(12.0107 g/mol) = 0.716 mol

From balanced equation 1 mole of C produces 1 mol of CO2

then 0.716 mol of C will produce 0.716 mol of CO2

    mass of CO2 = moles of CO2 x molar mass of CO2

    = (0.716 mol)x(44.01 g/mol)

    = 31.5 g

    percent yield = (actual yield / theoritical yield) x 100 = (14.0 g/31.5 g)x100 = 44.4%
