How did Luigi get so tall? In Super Mario 1 hes the same height as Mario?

Update:

Update: TStodden, thank you for your answer. Now i know why Luigi got tall, because he was basically a copy of the Doki Doki character. As you said it yourself "the game had 4 unique characters & it was the time where some of the character development of Luigi started to diverge from Mario in terms of looks"

Prior to Super Mario Bros. 2 US, Luigi was just a simple pallet swap of Mario as it was more economical in terms of storage space (since NES games were only 40 KB's before the introduction Memory Mapper Chips to increase the size of games).

When Super Mario Bros. 2 US (which was a reskin of the Famicom Disk game Doki Doki Panic, as the Japanese version of SMB 2 had similar graphics to SMB & was too difficult to be enjoyable for US audiences), the game had 4 unique characters & it was the time where some of the character development of Luigi started to diverge from Mario in terms of looks, skills & some personality.

Granted Super Mario Bros. 3 & Super Mario World fell back to pallet swapping (mostly to keep the gameplay balanced between players, although the storage savings was still beneficial), Nintendo would allow the brothers to appear different when the game would allow it (like Mario Kart, Mario Party & Super Smash Bros. to name a few).

In Super Mario 1 he's also just a pallet swap of Mario.
