Chaplin didn't shave his mustache, it was a prop and part of his character in the movies

"The Little Tramp" character wore the toothbrush mustache.  Charlie Chaplin was clean shaven off-screen.  He said that Hitler "copied the makeup" from him.

Chaplin grew up poor but resourceful and he did not forget his past.  He leaned Left, like any poor boy who resented disdain of the working man and the creative artist, and in the ultra-Conservative America of the 1950s, that was forbidden.  So was living outside the box.  Chaplin was a free spirit who would not be restrained to a circumspect film producer's life with a wife his own age. He had had sex with very young women, and his appearance and movements were fey.  He had a quick nasty temper and a very high self-opinion, so he was more likely to kick the box apart than be part of a quiet majority or an intolerant society.  He was a maverick who didn't fit the then current American mould. He would not obey like other big people in the film industry, so he had to be pushed out and smeared as a Communist. He had never applied for American citizenship, so when he left for Europe on business or a visit, he was barred from reentering the US as he was "un-American".

Actually Charlie Chaplin didn't have the mustache, The Tramp, his on-screen character, did.  Chaplin created The Tramp character for the movie Mabel's Strange Predicament in early 1914, before the start of World War 1, while Hitler was still working as a paper hanger in Munich.

Chaplin's film career started in 1914. By the time hitler rose to power, chaplin's distinctive "tramp" persona, that he played in most of his movies, was one of the most well known in the entire world. Chaplin did not style his mustache after hitler. If anything, hitler styed his mustache after chaplin

Charlie Chaplin was a US treasure. He was a great comic. He passed away in 1977. Let the guy rest in peace.
