As I've already noted elsewhere, the "toothbrush" moustache worn by Hitler from 1916 onward was adopted by him on order from his battalion commander.  The large, bushy "Kaiser", or "handlebar" moustache he wore previously wouldn't allow a gas mask to fit properly.  From mid-1915, Western Front armies had adopted poison gas as a tactical weapon, & troops were often required to wear gas masks for protection.

"Stalin" wore a type common in Eastern Europe at the time.

Hitler TRIMMED the sides of his so as to fit inside the gas masks in WWI, when he was a soldier.  He kept it, and it became his trademark.  Stalin Just had a Moustache
