The Spanish American War was the debut of America under President William McKinley as an aggressive military world power, with the immediate aim to take over the rich Cuban plantations, strategic ports, etc. It started with the intentional blowing up the Navy ship USS Maine in Havana harbor in February 1898 (in order to blame the Spanish government and "officially" start the war) killing the whole crew except the top brass who were at the time in Havana nightclubs and private parties. Lucky guys, huh? 🙄
