Secondary school art teacher with art history?

I want to be a secondary school art teacher. I’m confused on what steps and what degrees I need to do this. Could I qualify with a degree in art history?

They rarely teach art history these days, even at A level. You need practical art skills. You could do a BEd with art as one of your main subjects or a degree in Art then a PGCE or get a school based training programme.

The latter are very difficult to get for art, a friend of mine with a First in Art from Newcastle University and an MA from the Warburg Institute tried to get one for a few years but was never successful.

Art is being squeezed out of the curriculum. Good luck.
