Why did MTV stop playing music videos?

Partly because they made more money from The Ozbourne's reality show than anything else they had ever done before.

I think it’s cause they’ve created multiple channels that they dedicate to specific genres of music, allowing the main channel to focus on other forms of tv entertainment.

Because the world changed.
You can now get any video you want, any time you want, from either YouTube or Vimeo or similar platforms. Why would you watch a CHANNEL of nothing but videos, most of which won't match your tastes AND require you to watch ads?
MTV saw this coming and saw the rise of reality television. Reality shows, which are a huge misnomer as there is nothing real about them, are SUPER cheap to make and when you get a hit, it's basically free money. So MTV, just like History and Discovery and most other cable channels, rushed in to make reality programming. MTV was part of the vanguard of it.
One wishes they would change their name so that some channel that actually wants to do music themed programming could try to use the name, but there's too much money wrapped up in the branding. So 'Music Television' will likely never have much to do with music going forward.
