A few assumptions are needed here. For example, are the coordinates rectangular, on a regular grid? Are the X and Y scales the same? What is the relationship between map distances and real-life ("ground truth") distances?

You might think that these things are obvious, but they are not. For example, latitude and longitude are a common coordinate system, but they are not rectangular, the latitude scale is not the same as the longitude scale, and the relationship to ground truth is complicated.
