    It can be if they already have an established reputation that most people are familiar with (i.e. McDonalds).  There's already a customer base so you don't have to invest as much effort into marketing to get off the ground.

    Customers already know the name you are using so there will be more of them but higher costs because you have to keep paying fees. Also, when franchisees are about to go bust, they are encouraged to sell to another franchisee rather than go bust, failure is covered up that way.

    No. But it is easier, and less likely to fail in 5 years.
