Would an employee calling out of their shift negatively impact a business more than an employee arriving 10 minutes late to his or her shift?

    Usually yes

    For my last job it didn't matter, chances are you no longer had a job

    It is a moot question. Doesn't even matter , because doing either one too often will get you fired. 

  • Even if they're late there still at work, unlike the employee calling out and possibly leaving the business short staffed.

    Yep. More difficult to replace a worker for an 8-hour shift than have a worker stay over for 10 minutes.

    I'd say it's better late than never although repeats of lateness and someone becoming known for it annoys them as much as Houdini employees.
