Is a check from 1949 still valid?

Personal, payroll or government?
Personal checks are usually 6 months max
Payroll checks are also 6 months but a company still in business might reissue a check
Government checks are usually 1 year
So probably not

You would have to ask at the bank?

No, it's long dead. Because banks are bought and sold all the time, the numbers on it aren't even any good...... I had a similar thing. I found a graduation gift check in my toolbox for $20 a few years ago. I must have just stuck it in there because I opened the mail there, and forgotten about it. I graduated in 1993. I just stuck it back in the toolbox. NOW..... if this check is for a really significant amount, and from a company that still exists, they may be willing to replace the check.

Doubt it. Most banks will let you cash a check up to 6 months. Some banks may go longer.
Is the account still around.
