Should I coach my own child?
I co-own a gymnastics company and I often bring my 3yo daughter to practices so she can play on the trampoline, foam pit, ect. After growing up around other gymnasts and tagging along with me to meets, she wants to begin her own career in gymnastics. I never thought I’d have to deal with this dilemma, mostly because my other 3 girls wanted nothing to do with the sport. My gym, like the many others, don’t plan on opening up until next season so I have time, but when they do start opening up I plan on signing her up somewhere. I know that putting her on my team would save my wife and I a significant amount of money, but I’m afraid that I’ll turn into one of those crazy dads that pushes their kid way too hard or ends up favouring her and not pushing her hard enough. I don’t want to spend $2,400 on a membership, but I also don’t want to be the one reason she ends up hating the sport or not reaching her full potential. This sport has brought me so much joy in my life and I want my kid to feel the same love Ive been able to feel for it.
