Why pay for the cow when you get the milk for free- what does this mean?
Is this about prostitution?

No, it isn't directly about prostitution.
It is a saying coined by more conservative women (especially mothers) to encourage other women (especially their daughters) to make men wait for marriage before they let the man have sex with her.
The theory behind this saying is that men want sex, and that women offer men sex as part of the benefits of a relationship or getting married. If a woman just gives sex away before marriage then the man has no reason to marry her.
Whilst it isn't about what we normally think of as prostitution, some feminists say that this saying indicates that marriage is a form of prostitution.

It means why marry someone when you have all the benefits of marriage...like support or someone cooking and cleaning for you etc...without having to marry them. If I do all those things for a guy before marriage then what are the added benefits if we get married basically

No, it's about marriage. It's a cynical male view of blood sucking females.

No. Prostitution is renting the cow. Buying the cow is marrying the cow. Either way you get the milk, but in the first case you aren't stuck with cow. Plus when you marry the cow, it's often very expensive when she wants to get rid of you or you want to get rid of her. Cows are a lot of trouble.

I know a guy who told his girlfriend that when she said she wanted to get married. She dumped him.
