    I'm not sure what you mean by "scientific basis", but hydroponics is the practice of growing plants without soil. They can either be suspended in water with some kind of fixture, or in soil-less media like rockwool or pumice. The reality is that plants don't actually need soil if they can get water with adequate nutrients in it.

    *light
