Why do people hold someone's arm when escorting them?

When someone escorts someone somewhere like out of a building or place they hold their arm why? they know to follow or go with you. so why do they need to hold their arm?

    It's simple politeness. Men used to hold a woman's arm to escort her into dinner, or whatever. Watch some old movies.

    There is an old legal requirement that you have to have the person under control.  

    The expression about the 'long arm of the law' deals with it. When placing a person under arrest the officer is expected to touch them.  The criminal, on the other hand figures that the cops can't touch him.
