Australia is finally in recession. Can we cut immigration and build some affordable housing at last?

The official GDP growth of -0.3% for the March quarter actually isn’t that bad. I was expecting it to be worse than that. The June quarter will show steep drops but the economy will bounce back quickly from coronavirus-related slowdowns. Australia needs to address its economic structural weaknesses though. Economic growth in the country has been heavily dependent on population growth. Less immigrants would be catastrophic for the Australian economy. Productivity is going in the wrong direction which means GDP per capita is falling quite rapidly. Australia needs to start investing in infrastructure to get things going after the pandemic.

Immigration will help the country financially. But sure - you do you.
