Is WireShark (network analyzer) safe to use?

I'm a computer science student and we have to use WireShark in one of our assignments to connect to a remote desktop.

How dangerous is this? Will any of my sensitive information be transmitted in the process? Things like passwords and bank account details?

It says that when the interfaces are set to promiscuous mode, then ALL packets of data that are going through your computer can be transmitted.

It's a good idea to be a little sceptical, so you can think about what you've been told and use the tools you have to check.  As you are studying computer science I would have thought you'd be far better informed about what info is available, what promiscuous mode it, and what to do if you are concerned!
