    You tried EVERYTHING?

    Did you try choosing a beat frequency?

    Did you try deciding a direction?

    How about 20.00 Hz and running toward?

    The latter means that the frequency perceived by Paterson will be 20.00 Hz HIGHER than 440 Hz, and so will be 460 Hz.

    speed of sound V = 331 + 0.6*5.00 = 334 m/s

    unless you use some other algorithm for determining the speed of sound.

    Doppler:

    f = F₀*(V + Vr)/(V + Vs)

    Vr is positive if the receiver is moving toward the source, and

    Vs is negative if the source is moving toward the receiver

    460 Hz = 440Hz * (334 + Vr) / (334 + 0)

    solves to

    Vr = 15.18 m/s

    round appropriately.

    Note that Monteiro hears a different beat frequency:

    f' = 440Hz * (334m/s + 0) / (334 - 15.18)

    f' = 20.95 Hz

    since HE is stationary.

      If you want beats at 15.00 Hz, and you can't do the simple substitution yourself, I get Vr = 11.39 m/s.
