Do Soldiers and Marines pack their own ruck/assault packs?What do you pack?How heavy is it?How far have you ever carried one?

    Yes, and everyone has a different way of packing. First thing we did was remove that dumbass metal strip along the bottom. Then laid it flat. Packed the socks, underwear, tees and poncho on the side that touches your back. Then the rest of the required crap and whatever extra chow and ammo you can beg, borrow or steal. 50 plus pounds. Halfway across a country and back. We didn't have sleeping mats like they now carry. The nice hard ground was our mats. Little pile of leaves as a pillow !!! Trust me, it's not fun after 10 plus hours humping across gods green earth.

    yes.   think 50+ pounds; all of which you carry on your back for 50 miles or more

    everything you need for the mission..and more.
