Why does the UK accept so many refugees?

Nigel Farage exposed the hords of illegal refugees crossing the English Channel and now Boris Johnson is apparently considering accepting hundreds or thousands of Hong Kong refugees. I don't get it.

I mean we have had illegal immigrants entering the UK by boats for years now, why aren't there the necessary measures put in place to stop these illegals? Furthermore, why the hell is Boris considering allowing a huge amount of Hong Kong refugees into the UK?

We are a small country which is already overpopulated. We now have a huge number of non native Brits living in the UK, when will the government put a stop to this madness? Why does the government consistently ignore the genuine concern of millions of English people who have had enough this fiasco?

Update:

@Andrew I empathise with your feelings, but where do you intend to emmigrate to? Most other countries have their own problems and there is always the language barrier which can be a real hurdle. It's not always easy to settle in a foreign country.

Update 2:

@Salty dog, the UK didn't start wars in countries like Pakistan, India, Nigeria or Iran where many of these illegal immigrants are from, so what's their excuse for coming all the way to the UK? There aren't any wars in their countries either, these illegal immigrants are purely economic migrants!

You are asking a question that many people are asking but being labelled as 'racist' when they do. We are taking in too many. This nation is overcrowded. And what bugs me is that it's the same people who cry about the loss of farmland, the environment, and endangered species that scream for more immigration. Well, they might be able to take my place because I'm getting the hell out as soon as I can. I'm sick of feeling crowded and not being able to shop because of other people's seven or eight brats, etc etc etc.

You’re becoming an immigrant because you object to immigrants? Smart move, Andrew. 🍞🐳🍞

It is good that UK has taken up a policy of accepting refugees. The refugee should be given shelter and they have to follow the guideline of the government of the United Kingdom.

UK Government is the actual boss of those Hongkongers. After the reunion of Hong Kong with China, UK Government has implanted soft-invasion plan to mobilize a civilian force intending to overthrow Hong Kong Government and thus the Chinese Government. Now Chinese Government is really mad on British movement; British Government has to take a clever way to accept the core unit of its movement in case of any leakage of its role and its plan of invasion on china.

Why do many here think that one can just cross the English channel

and go direct onto social benefits?

It's a myth, propagated by the rightists. Here's a picture of what Tory benefits are all about.

Farage is always looking for the fly in the soup but, this time he wasn't supping beer.He was stuck on a boat in the English Channel. The French navy should have arrested his person for polluting the surrounding sea area.

Well, first we started a war together with the Yanks in the Middle East, most seem to have forgot that fact. But the reality is, wars cause a lot of refugees and political displaced people and some wars, won't take an end, and that's the problem in the Middle East.

We started a wars in Iraq that escalated to the whole region, so it's our responsibility to take the consequences. And that means taking-care of the displaced.

As for Hong Kong. We had robbed and exploited the Hong Kong Chinese for a century. We have hammer into them that they are British becasue this might make them feel, that being exploited by the British did have some rewards. So they want to come home now. We made promises to the Hong Kong Chinese, that we can't keep and we won't go up against China to support them.

If you don't want refugees and the like. Then don't start wars or empires.

Western countries are comitting suicide because of soy liberals. The power of a person's vote must be made proportional to the taxes that they pay.

    Stupidity.

Those crossing the channel are not refugees or asylum seekers, they are economic migrants cherry picking who gets to support them, once in, the family comes too.

Asylum seekers would seek safety in the first safe country they arrived at, not the fifth, and not leaving one to cross the channel to get to another.

All should be deported as bogus.

We do not owe Iranians a living.

We certainly do not need large numbers of Chinese from Hong Kong bringing trouble with them.

Because the UK is a signatory to the UN 1951 Refugee Convention as well as the 1967 Protocol and has therefore a responsibility to offer protection to people who seek asylum and fall into the legal definition of a "refugee", and moreover not to return (or re-route) any displaced person to places where they would face persecution.

"Illegal refugee" is an oxymoron. The migrants crossing the Channel are mostly genuine asylum seekers from countries like Iran and compared to the flood of millions of migrants brought to Europe's southern shores by criminal people smugglers in 2015 they are a mere trickle, approx 2,000 last year. And that was a small fraction of the approx 100,000 who crossed the Mediterranean last year. Priti Patel is seeking a deal with her French counterpart for the migrants to be returned to France. She is also investigating whether (presumably seaworthy) migrant boats could legally be turned round. Without COVID-19 the majority of asylum seekers would be visa overstayers anyway.

The Hong Kong citizens holding British passports were only denied UK citizenship as a condition of the deal with China for separate governing and economic systems under which the territory was returned to China in 1997. But China seems intent on reneging on that deal. In reponse the government is extending Hong Kong British passport holders' right to stay in the UK from 6 months to extendable periods of 12 months which could provide a pathway to future citizenship.
