Do nurse practitioners assist in surgeries? Perform surgeries?

MAy be, but more common would be trained first assists. No midlevel would do a full surgery (not a simple procedure) by themselves. Physician assistants are found more in surgery than NPs, and it would be like in cardiothoracic, orthopedics, etc. Their specific program dictates what they do/scope of practice. So a peds NP would not be in the OR for example.Source(s): PA
