What effects would UY Scuti have on Earth if it exploded in a supernova?

    Not much, its 5219 light years from Earth, not close enough to affect the planet.  But in 5219 years, an increase in background radiation might cause more dramatic aurorae.

    Virtually none... we'd *see* it, for a while anyway, but at it's distance, we'd be safe from any illl-effects.

  • UY Scuti is a red supergiant star. It is the largest known star in our entire known universe. ... In a few billion years, UY Scuti will run out of fuel and explode into a supernova. But UY Scuti has very low mass so this explosion will be very weak and we will only see a dot in the night sky.

    UY Scuti is 5219 light years from Earth. We would not know it had gone super nova for quite some time. The gamma rays and neutrinos would take time to reach us.
