Why is Scottish football so terrible?

Scotland is better at rugby than at football. Also it's very one sided with rangers and Celtic always being at the top and being in their own league where they thump every team (most of the time) and Celtic usually end up being champions every year.

When covid 19 subsides the Scots should be giving more attention to rugby

The problem with Scottish football lies with the 'suits' in charge of our game.

See, for so long through the 60's, 70's and 80's Scottish football was competitive on a European level and Internationally. We had an arrogance, believing we gave the beautiful game to the world and they were to learn from us. We qualified for 5 world cup's in a row from 1974 to 1990 and all was rosey in the Scottish football garden.

The problem was, we (or rather the suits) didn't consider there could be a time when we weren't competitive, even when our big name players started retiring and weren't replaced by similar quality. it was considered a blip. While other Nations started looking at grass roots and their general infastructure, we continued on the same arrogant route, believing we were Scotland and football was ours.

We stopped producing the world stars, our club teams stopped producing results in Europe, our domestic game turned stale, we relied all too often on sub standard foreign imports demanding top pay, our clubs declined, with only Rangers and Celtic capable of maintaining it.

We're stil suffering now. We're starting to produce a few decent players, but nowhere near the number we need. Our grass roots game is generally pay and play, with very few public parks catering for the kids, we have 'centres' but all too often it's too expensive for the poorer kids( the traditional section of society to provide our players) to afford it.

Add to the fact we have so many gaming systems where kids can live out their football fantasies in a virtual world, where in the past we'd go out and look to recreate those great moments from our heroes, taking on the roles of players like Zico or Bremner, Pele, Maradonna, Dalglish et all, kids can now sit in the comfort of their own homes and be multiple players at once at the literal press of a button.

It’s a problem of being a big fish in a small pond. Lack of competition is not good for sport.  Celtic need Rangers.

Depends what other leagues you compare it with. Scotland is a small country remember with a population of around 5 milllion compared to the 50 million that populate England. Therefore Scotland does not have as big a pool of players to choose from.

You could turn round and say Croatia Has a population of just 4 million and Uruguay 3 million and they are both good teams that have always produced quality players but unlike Scotland they focus sheerly on football. Scotland is more divided with a lot of people opting to play rugby instead.

You’ll notice countries like Croatia and Uruguay have never been good at rugby because the vast majority of their population choose football and football only. Hence why they normally do well for small nations.

Every football supporter will tell you, it's in the blood to support your team through thick and thin.

There is nothing to stop any supporter to follow both football and rugby, some do.

Scottish football has nearly always been a two horse races between Celtic and Rangers except for a spell in the 80s when Alex Ferguson’s Aberdeen were genuine challengers. From 2011, it had been a one horse race with no one providing any challenge to Celtic.

However, they used to produce class players and the top English clubs of the 60s and70s particularly Liverpool , Man Utd and Leeds were packed Scottish stars ( Dennis Law, Lou Macari, Ian St John, Billy Bremner, Kenny Dalgleish, Peter Lorimer, Graeme Souness etc).

However these days any Scottish players in the EPL play for strugglers like Norwich or West Ham. Foreign imports to the Scottish game is more than partly to blame.

As for rugby, ha, ha, ha!

They have as much change if winning the World Cup as the football team.

Scottish football is real football, I find english football physically repulsive due to the billions pumped into it by SKY tv and the over the top wages paid to over hyped players in the english premier league. Disgusts me.

Give me good honest Scottish football any day.
