It's a device that runs off the engine and produces electricity for the engine and the rest of the car.

While I agree it’s not part of the engine per se, it is a necessary part for the engine to run properly. I don’t think “accessory “ is the right description, that is really an optional add on. So where do we draw the line as what is and is not part of the engine.

Block, pistons, crankshaft, valve gear and cam shaft. No question.

What about spark plugs , distributor , leads , manifolds?

Water pump? Filters? Injectors / carbs?

    Well are they?

Perhaps the question isn’t so stupid after all.

Last time I looked at car accessories it was just things like first aid kits, tow rope, mats , baby seats etc.
An alternator is an engine auxiliary.

It's not an engine part. It's part of the charging system.

Forget anyone who says the alternator is “not part of the engine”. It is in fact part of the engine as it works directly with other parts of the engine so the entire engine can function properly.

The alternator is a power generator. It’s purpose is to keep the battery charged enough to start the car as well as provide ongoing power to the car’s electrical systems.

This is how it works. The battery starts the car, drive belt turns the alternator pulley, energy is generated by the alternator to maintain battery charge and supply continuous power to the rest of the engine.

If it wasn’t for the alternator your car would simply run off a draining battery until you are on the side of the road calling a tow truck.

You do NOT need an alternator to make an engine run. In fact an engine will run for some time with a dead alternator until the battery is dead, dumbass.

By your definition the battery is part of the engine. Also why would it be driven by an accessory belt if it NOT and accessory.

That is the charging system part. It is an engine accessory.

The alternator is an electric generator that provides the electric power necessary for the engine to function properly.

Also to keep you battery charged when your engine is on and all your vehicle's electrical needs.
