Getting a new key?

I was wondering if anyone knows how to get a new car key if you lost your only one. And how much are we talking for a new key.

If you would like a price for a replacement key, you need to share some more details...namely the year, make, and model of vehicle.

A dealer can often get you a new key for a vehicle through the VIN.

The dealer can get you a new key--but beware! This can in some places and for some cars cost you about $400 or more. It depends on the type of key it is. Programmable keys are extremely expensive.

Go to the dealer with the registration and your personal ID and they will punch out a perfect new key. If the key has a security feature the car won't start until the key is programmed to the car. Better get 2 while you have the chance.

You should never have only one key. FAIL. You will have to go to the dealer with the VIN and proof of ownership and have them make you TWO keys.

The price depends on the type of key it is. FAIL.

Take your title to he dealer to have a new Transponder key cut. They use the VIN to cut the key. You need the title to prove it's your car.

Then...have your car towed to the dealer so that the new keys can be programmed to the car.

If your car has an immobilizer (security system/anti-theft), expect over $200.

That really depends on what make and model of car, and what country you are in.

AAA will make you a sturdy car key of plastic, if you ever get locked out or lose your key. Therefore, the method is to make a good plastic replica, then go to a key expert or machine and make yourself a couple metal keys.

Dealer, proof of ownership of car and serial number. A new key will be made. A lock smith will do the same thing and are usually a little cheaper.

It depends on the car and the level of technology.  Some keys are just keys(go to home depot or Lowes).  Other more expensive keys have a chip inside(you need to go to the dealer for this one.  If you had only one key and lost it, then you have to contact the dealer and have them make you a new one.

Yes a locksmith can make a key, but does not have access to the chip code, if the car is so equipped.  Reverse engineering a lost key if more difficult than just calling the dealer for the key design formula.    If they find the hidden car key, then they could just make it, but the dealer is cheep.
