Hes a total idiot, more like. Covid 19 is causing deaths internationally. Closing some international travel is therefor a safe option to prevent infected people from unintentionally spreading it further.

Basically it's a hard choice, between "lives" and "livelihoods".

In the countries where authorities have been fairly lax about quarantines and closures, the coronavirus infection and death rates are higher.  We've been told that people can have the virus and be contagious for a week or more without showing any symptoms.  Testing protocols have been slow to get started.

The lockdown has definitely caused hardship and suffering, and damaged many businesses, large and small.  Some people will never get their jobs back.

My view:  There's a lot to be said for both points of view.  Now that things are opening up again, we may be in for a renewed outbreak of the virus, although hopefully a less drastic one.

Not necessarily. He could just be making different assumptions (and not bothering to check them out.)

People have many varying opinions in regards to the Coronavirus and the economic fallout. You not agreeing with or understanding your friend, does not negate this mindset makes sense to him.

Just the millions that have to live on unemployment is damage. We don't know about the family problems, personal problems that will emerge in the coming months. It can't compare to the deaths, of course.

Ask him how many people died because they had to stay home.

Tell your friend to ask that of the 100000 families who've lost a family member.  When dollars are valued more than life the system is f ucked.
