A virus that has lived in a species for a long period of time often become accepted as normal. Those individuals that were most susceptible are killed off, leaving only those individuals that are most resistant. So the virus becomes commensal in the species rather than pathogenic.

Viruses are parasites. Parasites need hosts. If a parasite kills its host quickly, then it will become extinct unless it finds a new host. Therefore parasites tend to evolve to be less virulent over time. Animals also tend to evolve to fight the virus more effectively.
