Write a melody five measures long; (A). Write a different melody, six measures; (B). Return to the first melody; (A). There you have a composition in ABA form; sixteen measures.

Use 4 sections of 4 measures each. Write a short melody. In the next 4 bars, use similar rhythm, but a few different notes. The next 4 measures - do this that contrast or are different (just not crazy different). Your last 4 bars did be similar to the beginning, and get you HOME. If you start and end on DO, and then it will feel completed. This is fast and sketchy advice - if you were in my classes, I would have taught you better!!
