Is now a good time to lease/buy a car?

a friend said that since the pandemic most dealers have closed but some reopened here in Ontario Canada and that the agents will be desperate to do anything they can to sell you a car since they had trouble doing so when it was close and those agents get paid on commision

It is a good time because car companies are offering some of the best financing and lease deals seen in years. Note that these deals are being offered by car companies not by the dealers themselves. Dealer prices haven't fallen much even though sales are slow. They now must make more profit on fewer sales. Therefore, you only get discounts the old fashion way -- you negotiate for them.

No matter what season it is, whether a pandemic is happening or not, any car dealer will list off 20 reasons why right now is the perfect time to buy a new car.

If you say you don't have the money for something new, they'll list off 20 reasons why right now is the perfect time to buy a used car.

Are you starting to see the pattern here?  And yes, yes they do get paid on commission.

If you are ready to buy a car right now anyway, then you can probably get a slightly better deal because dealers are more desperate to move their inventory.

If you are just buying because you think "its a good time" but you're not financially ready for it then it would be a mistake. The discounts are not lucrative enough to justify buying a car if you were not already in position to do so.

I ordered parts from a Honda dealership, a couple of times during the shutdown.

    They were still doing business.

Don't know about Canada, but dealers in the US have never closed. They are "essential businesses" because they provide parts and maintenance for cars and trucks.

Manufacturers ARE offering low or zero interest loans to buy a new car, so if you want to finance a new car, this is a good time to do that.

Think of yourself as an amateur playing in the salesman's professional ballpark.

Yes, the economy is great. Nobody has lost their job and leasing is such a great idea. Sarcasm.
