A  campfire is  something that  you  cook  food in a frying pan on, a Bonfire is  something that  you  stand  around, have a few  beers, keep  warm  and  chat.

There is absolutely no practical difference at all. Quite a few people have answered that bonfires are bigger. There is no prescribed size for a bonfire. A campfire is simply a bonfire at a camp.

A bonfire is generally larger where spectators stand, whereas a campfire is small and intimate where people sit around it safely

A bonfire is a large but controlled outdoor fire, used either for informal disposal of burnable waste material or as part of a celebration.

A campfire is a fire at a campsite that provides light and warmth, and heat for cooking. It can also serve as a beacon, and an insect and predator deterrent.

The difference is in the purpose of the fire and some can be called either one. There is a picture difference in our mind of typical bonfire versus campfire. We sit around a campfire with flames less than a meter tall, and diameter about a meter. A bonfire is typically larger. A large campfire would appear like a small bonfire.

A bonfire is typically very big. And a campfire is typically used for warmth, cooking, keeping critters away, relaxation, or a small social gathering. A bonfire may be for a large gathering of people for a celebratory reason.
