Buns cost 40p each. Cakes cost 55p each. I spend exactly £4.35 on buns and cakes. How many of each did I buy?

4 buns (£1.60) and 5 cakes (£2.75) (= £4.35).  I did it in what your teachers would call the "wrong" way, so I couldn't possibly tell you how!

Edit: I don't know why I've got thumbs down, unless your teachers are on this site. And my answer is obviously correct.

Can't answer. Don't know the tax rate.

No tax on this type of food in the UK. You don't need to make it more complicated than it is.

Well you know the answer is less than 10 buns, so start at half that and divide the answer into the cost of buns.

If you can spot a trend then follow it.

    5 buns = 5x 40 = £2.00 leaving 235p for cakes 235/55 = 4.27 so that cannot be correct, so try it for 4 buns or 6.
