I like questions like this, you know, the easy ones. The best kind of car for her is the one you give her!

OR which ever car SHE can afford...

How about the one she buys.

The best car is no car. You do not need a car to attend college. I have seen teenagers as freshman getting into too much trouble because of a car. I managed to get through 4 years of college without a car.

if she can afford it, whatever she wants. If you are buying, whatever you can afford

A used Jeep Patriot or Compass.

The type of car she gets ought to be based on (1) who's paying for it, (2) who's paying the insurance and (3) how much it will cost her to own it. If an SUV fits the bill, then get her an SUV--there's nothing wrong with them, especially the smaller ones.

That may be what she wants, but it's not what she needs. What she actually needs is something reliable and safe, and which she, as a new driver, can cope with.
